James McClean of Republic of Ireland kisses the badge on his shirt following his side’s victory during the FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Wales.
McClean was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, and made seven appearances for their national team at U-21 level. He was called up for the senior team but withdrew from the squad after opting to play for the Republic of Ireland instead.
“You are looking around as a Catholic and seeing all the Union Jacks and listening to the fans’ songs and I just didn’t feel at home at all,” he said when reflecting on his decision.
