Sam Allardyce, who managed El Hadji Diouf when he was at Bolton, brought the controversial player to Blackburn in January 2009. However, once Allardyce was sacked, Diouf’s future at the club became in doubt, having played over 50 games for Blackburn and kissing their badge. He joined Rangers on loan until the end of the season.
Diouf kissed Rangers’ badge after his team took the lead against Celtic in the Scottish Cup 5th Round and at the end of the season stated his desire to stay in Scotland. He didn’t report back to Blackburn for pre-season training and new manager Steve Kean said the player was not part of his plans. His contract was terminated by mutual consent.
