Isco was right not to kiss the badge

12 08 2013

It’s summer, which means it’s time for Real Madrid to start unveiling players at the Santiago Bernabeu to the cheers of Madridistas and flashes of cameras.

On Wednesday, it was Isco’s turn in Los Blancos’ spotlight, after confirming a move from Malaga and a five-year contract in the Spanish capital.

“This is your house, welcome to Real Madrid,” said club president Florentino Perez as he handed the 21-year-old the No. 23 shirt, previously worn by David Beckham. (Quote via

The Euro U-21 Championships winner appeared delighted with his new move, but he caused consternation when he refused to kiss the badge of his new employer. In lieu of his own lips, his brother kissed the crest on the new shirt.

In a subsequent press conference, Isco explained his reticence by saying he wanted to “earn the right” to kiss the badge with his performances on the pitch.

Isco does what Ibrahimovic couldn’t and refuses badge kiss

12 07 2013

At his unveiling as a Real Madrid player, Isco made the unusual decision not to kiss the badge which is customary for new signings at the Bernabeu. Instead, he got his brother to kiss the badge.

Isco is a badge kisser though. He kissed Malaga’s badge in the two year period he played for them after signing from his boyhood club Valenciia.

The same behaviour takes place at the Nou Camp, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic feeling forced in to kissing the badge.

Pepe’s proud to be… Portuguese?

13 06 2012

After putting Portugal 1-0 up in their second Euro 2012 game, Pepe was seen celebrating grabbing and kissing the badge.

Pepe was born and grew up in Brazil though, starting his career with Corinthians-AL, before moving to Portugal when he was 18-years-old to play for Maritimo. He didn’t represent Brazil at youth level before moving to Portugal and when he was given Portuguese citizenship when he was 24-years-old he opted to play for them.

“I’ve already made it clear how much love I have for Portugal,” he said two years ago. “I feel more Portuguese than Brazilian. I feel this country and I still owe so much to the people.”

Portugal’s badge isn’t the only one Pepe’s lips are familiar with though, with the Real Madrid defender happy to kiss his club’s badge too.
